Background:

In 1919, India was under British rule, and Indians were demanding greater political representation and independence from the British Empire. As part of this movement, a protest was organized in Amritsar on April 13, 1919, to demand the release of two Indian leaders who had been arrested by the British authorities. The protesters were led by a prominent Indian leader named Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and were joined by thousands of people, including men, women, and children.

The Incident:

The protesters gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden that was surrounded by high walls with only one narrow entrance. The British military, led by General Reginald Dyer, arrived at the site and ordered the crowd to disperse. However, the protesters did not have any means to leave the premises as the entrance was blocked by the military.

Without warning, General Dyer ordered his troops to open fire on the unarmed and peaceful crowd. The firing continued for ten minutes, during which time more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition were fired. Many people were killed instantly, while others were injured and left to die. The victims included men, women, and children, and many of them were shot in the back as they tried to flee.

Aftermath:

The Jallianwala Bagh incident caused outrage among Indians, and it was widely condemned both within India and internationally. The British government initially defended General Dyer's actions, but later he was relieved of his duties and forced to retire.

The incident had far-reaching consequences and played a significant role in India's struggle for independence.

Non-violence movement

It galvanized the Indian independence movement, and many Indians became more committed to the cause of independence. It also led to a wider movement of non-cooperation against the British colonial government. This incident led to the formation of Congress Government.
